How Algebra is Used in Astronomy
Algebraic Usage in Astronomy
Algebra, which is another name for mathematics that everyone uses and generally knows many times a day, has great importance and a significant place within astronomy. An example of this is that knowing mathematics, i.e., algebra, is necessary to measure and calculate the displacements of planets in space. To better grasp and understand its importance, another example is that the proximity or distance of planets to each other can be found and understood through mathematics, in other words, algebra. Looking back at history, Galileo Galilei, an important physicist and also a very good mathematician, can be given as the best example. Galileo, who was also a famous astronomer, was the first person to discover that the Earth is round. This famous thinker, considered one of the mathematical geniuses of history, made significant contributions to the development of astronomical science by using the values and numbers of mathematics. Algebra is used in astronomy in the form of calculations, numbers, and measurements. When you think about it a little, you can see that mathematics is generally the most fundamental content and ancestor of all sciences and branches of science. This should, of course, not be viewed solely as astronomy but should be considered generally. For example, while a geometry expert finds the interior angles of a triangle, they use mathematics and perform calculations. At the same time, a physicist must also know angle calculations to understand whether an angle is acute or obtuse, and must calculate the angle using numbers, meaning they must know mathematics. The Universe and Algebra When we examine the sky and celestial bodies through telescopes, we actually see that the universe is in a mathematical balance, to the extent that it can be seen as a work of art, and that it is built upon mathematics. Thanks to the science of mathematics, we can know and interpret how far away the stars are from us. The connection between astronomy and astrology is established through mathematics. In other words, this vast and magnificent universe is built upon a great and extraordinary mathematics, and humankind has made things much easier in all aspects by putting these into numbers.
What are Astronomy and Astrology?
Astrology, a science that has taken a large place in our daily lives, is considered a science by many people, although some do not consider it a science. When you first meet someone, after asking their name and profession, as the conversation progresses, you immediately ask for their zodiac sign. The topic of zodiac signs is seen as both a means of getting closer and an attempt at socializing. For example, while men ask each other about the teams they support, women generally ask each other about their zodiac signs and try to learn about the person in front of them. In astrology, in addition to the general characteristics of zodiac signs, there are also daily, weekly, monthly, and even yearly interpretations. When we look at astronomy and examine other societies, especially the Turkish society, astrology is taken into consideration along with the logic of "don't believe in fortune-telling, but don't be without it either," even if they do not believe in it.
